painting

From the studio 3 : Surface Prep

It’s time to start something new! This week I’ve been preparing a new large painting with linen pulled over a hand-built 5 by 6 foot wood stretcher. This vlog shows my process of stretching a large scale painting using a staple gun, iron stretching tool and hammer. I then add in layered washes of color before giving the full piece a coat of clear acrylic to prepare for building up imagery with oil. Maybe I will inspire you to start a painting too?

This process definitely is a “pain” as pain-ting goes–up and down from the knees and around, using strength to pull and reaching and bending to stain and gesso. I was a bit sore the day after, for sure. Artists keep in shape (in a way), no doubt.
